Pressure sensitive labels are a versatile labeling solution, but even the right label can run into challenges during application. Wrinkling, inconsistent placement, scuffing, bubbling, or labels that simply won’t stick can all impact the appearance and performance of your finished package.

The good news? Many common pressure sensitive label issues can be traced back to a few key areas, including application equipment, container conditions, label materials, and adhesive selection.

Here are some common pressure sensitive label problems, potential causes, and troubleshooting steps to help keep your labeling line running smoothly.

Wrinkling During Application

If labels are wrinkling as they are applied to the container, start by checking the peel blade. Make sure the blade is parallel to the package and positioned properly for the application.

If wrinkles continue, try moving the peel blade closer to the container.

Application speed can also play a role. If labels are being applied too quickly, reducing the application speed may help provide a smoother, more consistent result.

Incorrect or Inconsistent Label Placement

Are labels ending up in different positions from one container to the next? Start by checking whether your containers are moving during application. If they are, adjustments to the equipment may be needed to keep each container properly positioned as the label is applied.

The label sensor is another important place to check. A dirty sensor can contribute to inconsistent placement or even cause multiple labels to be applied to a single container.

If cleaning the sensor doesn’t resolve the problem, the equipment may need to be retrained or recalibrated to properly detect the label stock and liner.

Scuffing and Scratching

Some pressure sensitive label issues don’t become apparent until after application.

If you’re noticing scuffs or scratches on your labels, inspect and clean the wipe-down pad and wiper. Debris or buildup on these components can damage the label surface as it moves through the application process.

If cleaning doesn’t resolve the issue, the wipe-down pad or wiper may need to be replaced.

Labels Falling Off or Not Adhering

When labels aren’t sticking properly or begin falling off after application, there are several factors to consider.

First, check the label construction and specifications to make sure the material and adhesive are appropriate for the application and container.

The condition of the container surface is also important. Water, condensation, oils, dust, or other contaminants can interfere with the adhesive’s ability to properly bond to the container. Make sure the surface is clean and dry before application and check any drying equipment on the line.

Temperature, container material, surface texture, and storage conditions can also influence adhesive performance. If adhesion problems continue, it may be time to evaluate whether a different adhesive or label construction is better suited for the application.

Bubbling After Application

Bubbles underneath a pressure sensitive label can be caused by insufficient or uneven contact pressure during application.

Start by checking the angle and pressure of the wiper to make sure the label is making consistent contact with the container. The position of the peel blade may also need to be adjusted.

It’s also important to consider the container itself. Surface irregularities, container shape, or other characteristics can make smooth label application more challenging.
